The Love Feast

Today at the YWAM facility, we served a Love Feast. The goal is to create a "family" atmosphere and truly serve lunch to our guests. Todd, Emily, and Holli are dishing out food to the servers who will be taking it to our guests. More pics will follow.

Serving at the Glide

This morning, we are going over to the Glide to serve breakfast to 800. Pray for us to continue to show all God's love to those being served.

Expressions

Last night we spent the evening participating in expressions. It was a time for all to relect on the week and talk with God, asking him to help them look at what they have learned and express back what God was saying to them, what they feel they need to do going forward. We started off the time with one of the YWAM leaders sharing her testimony and then explaining the stations that were setup around the room.

There was a station that had a coffin and in it were pictures showing growing things. Laying around the station were stones that could be written on things that were holding you back on things you needed to give over to God to rid from your life. After spending time in prayer, you would toss the stone into a pool in the coffin and the letters would slowly disappear.

There were multiple stations that had bibles and journals from the past 5+ years that kids had written in after their week. The kids could read the entries and create entries of their own about how God has spoken to them and how they can move forward in their walk.

Other stations included a cross with slips of paper that could be written on with anything they wanted to give over to Christ and nail it to the cross. A station for doing foot washing with a friend or someone you need to forgive. An a couple stations that had mirrors that you could look into and reflect on what God sees in the mirror.

Overall, it was a great night to reflect back and look forward in each individuals walk.

Appreciation

Today I heard something that every parent would love to hear, so I am going to share it with you all. We will all be proud to know that all the kids agreed with what was said but the Hejduk’s get the joy of knowing that it came out of their daughter’s mind and mouth first.

Let me frame what we did first…Today was the Homeless plunge. We were kicked out of the YWAM facility at 9:00 am with a map of free food locations and a bus fair. We were not permitted to take any additional money or our cell phones. (leaders excluded) We had to be homeless for the day and find all that we needed through the day on our own, this included food, water, restroom facilities, etc…

We ate lunch at St. Anthony’s, stood in line for about 30 minutes and ate what they put on our plate, there were no options and there were many things that challenged our comfort level. We made it through it and met a couple very interesting people in the process. That story we will tell later.

What I was excited to hear was what Paige said. We were doing the debrief afterwards and the question was “what did you learn today that changed your outlook on things?” Paige said “when I am at home, I go to the fridge or the panty and constantly say ‘there is NO food here!’ and the truth is that there is nothing that is specifically want at that time. My mom goes to the store every week and spends hundreds of dollars providing food for me and any of these people we ate lunch with today would give anything to have a home full of food in the pantry. How unappreciated am I?”

What else can I say…God is awesome.

Tuesday stuff…

I was mistaken about what we were going to do on Tuesday. We didn’t do The Hunt, we did that today. Instead, we did the Bucket Brigade where we went around the Tenderloin District and swept, cleaned windows and anything else we could do for business owners.

So Tuesday was a long day, so long I am having a hard time remembering the details, especially after a long day today. By far the Homeless Snack Lunch was the most exciting and fulfilling. Numerous great conversations. I am trying to get the kids to write the details up on their experiences, so stay tuned. (ice cream is winning out tonight) Here are some pictures from Homeless Sack Lunch.

Tuesday Night was Hot Chocolate Brigade, taking a thermos of hot chocolate and cups looking for people on the street after dark when the temperature has dropped considerable and could use a warm drink. My group met a guy that was telling us that Billy Graham was president 3 times but he is dead now, he seemed to know his bible well but I think the Sodom and Gomorrah story seemed to run into the tribulation. Wasn’t sure if he believed that Jesus had already returned but the conversation was very interesting. Either way, we prayed for him and his future, and he was anxiously waiting for the day that he would get to see his wife again in heaven.

Pictures are coming.

Today's schedule - Tuesday

Today, we will...

Skyscraper Safari - We will be given directions, history, as well as other important information on some of the famous skyscrapers located in the heart of the financial district. We will intercede for the men and women who work at these office buildings, and pray for the financial decisions that are being made which will affect the world.

Homeless Sack Lunch - This involves going to a park or plaza with two sack lunches: one for yourself and one to share. The team will sit down and share their lunches with a homeless person while engaging in conversation.

The Hunt - Our teams will “compete” against each other to fulfill a list of required activities within our neighborhood. This is a great mixture of fun and evangelism, which unifies the members of your group as they work together to accomplish each task. Sample activities include: Ride the elevators of three local hotels to their highest floor; Find the most creative way to bless a homeless person; bless a police officer or security guard.

Airport security

Read the “3-1-1 Brochure” that I emailed to you. It gives good guidelines around what can be carried onto the plane and how to get through security.

If you have additional questions, go to www.tsa.gov.

I have had lots of questions about what can be carried onto the plane versus put in your suitcase that will be checked prior to going through security (checked bag), here is a good list I got off the TSA web site…

Not sure about what you can and can't bring through the checkpoint? (on the plane) Here's a list of liquid, aerosol and gel items that you should put in your checked bag, ship ahead, or leave at home.

• Cranberry sauce
• Cologne
• Creamy dips and spreads(cheeses, peanut butter, etc.)
• Gift baskets with food items(salsa, jams and salad dressings)
• Gravy
• Jams
• Jellies
• Lotions
• Maple syrup
• Oils and vinegars
• Perfume
• Salad dressing
• Salsa
• Sauces
• Snowglobes
• Soups

Note: You can bring pies and cakes through the security checkpoint, but please be advised that they are subject to additional screening.

Remember! – do not wrap gifts you're taking on the plane. Security officers may have to unwrap gifts if they need to take a closer look. Please ship wrapped gifts ahead of time or wait until your destination to wrap them.

* Items purchased after the security checkpoint have been pre-screened and can be taken on the plane.

Plans set for Friday night at Jericho’s

As the 2nd night of training in preparation for our San Francisco trip, we will be serving at Jericho’s this Friday night from 6:00-11:00. We will be leaving my house at 5:30 in 4 cars. All 3 leaders will be driving along with Teresa Dittman, Todd’s wife. At this time, plan to be there all evening, but I am hoping that things will slow down and we can send some back early. Parents, we will call you as plans start to unfold for the evening so you know when to plan to pick up your son/daughter at my house. The latest I have gotten back is 11:15.

I believe Stephanie’s team is planning a get together prior to going down there, so that will be an exception. (her team includes Aubrey, Michael, and Emily)

If you haven’t been to my house, it is near the intersection of SR23 and Orange Road, the address is:
300 S. Parkway Drive

Training - Wednesday June 9

We will be holding our first night of training this Wednesday night, 6:30-8:30. We will meet in the school library, next to the entrance in the rear.

We will have a special guest working with us that night. James Ingerham, founder of Jericho's light club, will be working with us to understand how to share our faith and God's love to those living on the street. James has a powerful testimony which includes time on the street himself and I am excited to hear what God has for him to teach us.

The first hour, we will go over some details about the trip, Q&A session, overview of what we will be doing in SanFran, and some team building time for each of the 3 teams.

PARENTS - you are welcome to come to any or all of the night. I will start the night off with details about what to bring and what to expect on the trip.

Questions? Bring them to Wednesday...see you all then.

God is good, Jericho’s is happening

All the glory goes to God for coming through on both ends. We have 3 mom’s that have volunteered to help pull together the food for the June 18 evening and God has also provided the needed funds to pay for it. So everything is set, Training night #1 – Wednesday, June 9 at the church as planned. Training night #2 – Friday, June 18, we will serve at Jericho’s 6:00-11:00.

Jericho’s Night is not coming together.

As I had communicated earlier, I wanted to take the kids down to Jericho’s on the Friday night before (June 18) our trip and have them serve for the evening. There would be a number of things I was planning to do to prepare the kids for our SanFran trip. I need at least one adult to help pull this together, prepare food, etc… and I need multiple families to help pay for it. As of right now I have none. So, if I don’t hear from someone by end of day tomorrow, Thursday, I am going to cancel this and go another direction with training night #2.

Help Needed for Training

Parents,

As part of the training for our San Francisco trip, I would like our group to prepare and serve a meal at Jericho’s Light club on Broad Street in Columbus. I need a couple parents to work with me to plan, buy, prepare, and take the food down to Jericho’s. Obviously, I want the students to do as much of the work as possible but I still need some parent involvement, at least to supervise and provide.

If you would be willing to work with me on this, please let me know soon so we can plan it. This would be the Friday before our trip, June 19th. Cost will be around $100 total, so if you can contribute to the cost but not help, that would be appreciated too.

Also, if you want more info about Jericho’s let me know.

Not much of an update Update!

Ok, I don't really have much to tell anyone, but I thought I would at least tell you what is going on in the way of planning for our trip. Most of my effort is going around getting the other two leaders in place and looking into airline tickets. I learned last year that booking a 10+ group isn't as easy as logging onto Travelocity.com and getting the latest $399 seat special. Noooooooo, they have to be much more expensive. So far I am seeing prices from $415 to $750, that's right, you read it, $750. There are all kind of reasons why and I am not getting into in now.

Big thing is getting everyone committed, once I buy the tickets, they are ours. So if anyone is having even close to 2nd thoughts, let me know ASAP!

Spent the the last few days with Brent Saba, he is very interested in what we are doing in SanFran. We were trying to work it out for him to go with us since all of you should remember him from last year at Urban Hope. Unfortunately, too much going on in Phili, not gonna happen.

Key date ... I need all money in by April 25. Gotta pay for those tickets!

By for now.
